"Heather on the Road to Fairy Plain" - original watercolour by Glenn Marshall 12" x 8" Painted on Saunders Waterford 140lb CP White paper with Winsor & Newton artists paints I have had the pleasure of spending several very happy painting holidays in a little cottage in Fairy Plain. Fairy Plain is in Fryup Dale on the North Yorkshire Moors. This is the second in an exclusive series for the Cellar Gallery in Whitby, so if you would like to see the original that's the place to go. "The Tarn" - original watercolour by Glenn Marshall 12" x 7" Painted on Saunders Waterford 140lb CP White with Winsor & Newton artists paints Part of the attraction of the North Yorkshire Moors is the bleakness of it's vast empty spaces. It is a place where you can wander in perfect solitude undisturbed except for the odd sheep or an occasional grouse. This was a very easy painting to do as I love the place so much. Spring evenings are the perfect time to visit and paint this incredible area. The original will be on display in the Cellar Gallery, Whitby in a couple of weeks.
"Solitude" - original watercolour by Glenn Marshall 18" x 14" Painted on Saunders Waterford 140lb CP White with Winsor & Newton artists paints This was painted as part of my 'Inspirations' series - a group of paintings based on the work of artists who have provided me with much inspiration. This is loosely based on an oil painting by John Atkinson Grimshaw, a great Victorian painter whom I much admire.
This is a painting of my Studio Gallery in Old Town, Bridlington. It was a great experience being a part of the then thriving artist community there a few years ago. There are some marvellous advantages about owning your own Gallery. The main one is the complete control you have where and how your work is displayed. The Gallery was quite small so we just used to exhibit Merice's manipulations and photos along with my watercolours and prints. It was also a great base for workshops and classes. We lived in a flat at the back of the Gallery but it was too small, so when we moved to our lovely home in Sewerby we reluctantly decided to close the shop. Sadly most of the other galleries closed shortly after due to the effects of the credit crunch. But great news. Here is the new Glenn Marshall Gallery: If my old Gallery was small, this is positively tiny......very tiny! In fact we've made it to go in the Bondville Miniature Village here in Sewerby which opens tomorrow. I will be posting some shots of my new gallery in situ after the grand opening tomorrow, but you don't have to wait - come along and see for yourself - I'll look out for you. Glenn
This is one of four iPad paintings on exhibition at the Bondville Miniature Village in Sewerby. As well as an amazing tour of the miniature village, you can also enjoy a range of excellent food at the Bondville Village Cafe. This season'e grand opening is on Saturday 19th April so why not come along and have a look - you will not be disappointed. Glenn
"Daffodils of Hope" - original watercolour by Glenn Marshall 20" x 16" Saunders Waterford 140lb CP White When I was artist in residence at Burton Agnes Hall, I often used to wander (not lonely as a cloud!) to the incredible swathes of daffodils planted there by the MacMillan Cancer Support Charity. It was one of their 'Fields of Hope' a poignant reminder of the sterling work they do for cancer sufferers and their families. Although not my usual subject I was moved to paint this and donate proceeds to them. I thought it might be a nice way to wish you all a very Happy Easter. Glenn
We have had a run of dull, gray days just recently.....just dull...not misty. There is a difference isn't there? Misty mornings have a certain romance about them holding out the promise of better things later on. But in the meantime the mist shrouds everything with an air of mystery. We used to walk the banks of the River Ouse almost every morning when we lived near York. One such stroll on a misty morning inspired a watercolour painting called "Cold and Frosty Mooring" featuring a friend's boat moored by the riverbank. I'm hoping to include a series of iPad paintings in our 'Double Vision' exhibition in November so am looking for some suitable compositions. This is based on my watercolour and it is interesting to compare the two mediums. I've elaborated before on their relative strengths and weaknesses so suffice to say this time that they are intriguingly different. Here's a step by step of the painting: And with the joys of modern technology there's even a video......... .....that is the lot....promise! I hope you have more 'misty' than 'dull' days. 'Bye for now, Glenn.
I will be holding 'Watercolour Magic' workshops throughout our 'Double Vision' exhibition at Bridlington Spa later this year on the following dates: Weds 29th October - Working with washes Weds 5th November - Painting with light Weds 12th November - Textures in watercolour Weds 19th November - Composition and Design The workshops will start at approximately ten in the morning and meander through till about four in the afternoon with a nice relaxing lunch in between. Each workshop is complete in itself and designed to suit all abilities. Please bring your painting gear and be prepared to have a very enjoyable and enlightening (I hope!) day with like minded people who love watercolour painting. You can bring your own lunch or take advantage of the excellent catering facilities at the Spa. There is also a licensed bar if we get too hot! There is plenty of space for the workshops and the light is excellent. The cost has been kept at just £50 per person for the day so just get in touch and book your place for a 'magical' experience. Here's a brief YouTube clip to give you an idea of the relaxed and informal atmosphere you can enjoy. It was taken during a workshop in the Orangery at Sewerby Hall...yes we do do some 'posh' places! The painting above - "Lake Tranquility" - was painted during this workshop.
