Glenn Marshall - biography
I have letters after my name - F.O.L. But it is not 'Fellow of'...but....'Fell Off'...a ladder!
Yes - I literally fell into painting. I had given up full time work to look after my wife who was very ill. I worked part time to raise some cash but in February 1999, ended up falling from a ladder and smashing my knees. I was not a very 'patient' patient, Merice had noticed how much I enjoyed watching "Watercolour Challenge" and "A Brush with Ashley" on the TV, so she bought me a set of brushes, three watercolour paints and some paper. I had plenty of time on my hands recuperating, so I began to practise, practise and practise. Totally hooked I spent a month just painting (or trying to paint!) skies and another five or six weeks working on trees until gradually I could produce some semblance of a finished piece.

Initially I was very heavily influenced by Yorkshire Artist Ashley Jackson, and tried to emulate his paintings of the Yorkshire Moors. This is one of my earliest paintings ever photographed. Sadly this was in pre-digital days so the very early stuff has not been recorded, but I think you can see where I was going.

However after some additional 'work'(?) to the sky it was decided that the painting would have to be(needed to be now!) cropped - so here it is - "Purple Haze" among my first 'framed' efforts.
Gradually I developed my own style and reached a standard where I was accepted by a couple of galleries but it wasn't until 2003 that I began to make real progress and start to sell paintings...click here to get the details. From these unlikely beginnings I have now sold paintings all over the world and exhibited in numerous galleries including Scarborough Art Gallery, the Ferens Gallery in Hull, Leeds City Art Gallery, The Mall Gallery in London, R.J. Burt Gallery in London. I am also pleased to be a professional associate with the Society for All Artists. I am also very proud to have had paintings featured in New York, Houston and Montreal.
Yes - that fall certainly changed my life!
