This year I am back at Bridlington Spa throughout the month of August this time. I am looking forward to being part of “Three Journeys” comprising work by Penny McLean, my dear old mate Rob Gobel and yours truly. Although not limited to any particular location I am going to focus on my lovely little village of Sewerby and its surroundings. I have already started work but you will have to wait until August to see the new paintings….sorry. However to give you a flavour of what I am doing here is a painting I did a couple of years ago featuring the well worn pathway between Sewerby and Dane’s Dyke. I have walked it so often and yet the heavy snow that winter transformed the scene into something magical. The strong shadows add a bit of contrast and drama painted, of course, with my usual combination of brown madder and ultramarine blue. I have not used too many colours but the little touches of red and raw sienna add lots of warmth – this is a walk you could look forward to and enjoy. As an aside when I posted this on another website it would not allow me to use the original title and it threatened me with blocking if I persisted with it on the grounds that it did not tolerate offensive language. I can only assume it took offence against ‘Dyke’ though why a ‘defensive ditch’ should cause such a furore I can’t imagine! I look forward to seeing you in August when it will not be snowing….I hope.
